Summary
In Chapter 8, the Greek teacher recalls returning to Seoul from Germany and visiting the temple where he once celebrated Buddha’s Birthday. He found that the area itself appeared different and that the “beauty alone was unchanged” (63). The teacher describes a recurring dream in which he is riding the incorrect bus.
In Chapter 9, the teacher writes to his sister in Germany and fondly remembers the “early hours of the dawn [that] inevitably found me walking the alleys alone” (65). He notes that, due to his growing blindness, he can only walk around during the day’s brightest hours. In the letter, he discusses the chick that he and his sister, Ran, briefly raised.
