India
India is the overarching setting for all of the short stories. Indian culture influences the values the characters teach to their children and the importance of the animals included.
Mussoorie
Mussoorie is a small mountain town where Grandfather was born and spent most of his life. Mussoorie is connected to the rest of India through an extensive hillside railway system. The natural landscape is breathtaking.
The Forest
The forest is the native home to all of the animals that serve as companions or antagonists of the characters. The forest is self-sustaining and recovers from fires and flooding.
River Ganges
The River Ganges runs alongside many of the villages described in the stories. The river is almost like the lifeblood of the villages and the forest which sustains all of the animals. The river is also important as it relates to Indian culture and certain religious rituals.
