Summary
The novel resumes after the war in 1948. Matilda Feiffer now owns a publishing house and manages the wealth from her late-husband’s estate. She reaches out to Marian because she wants to make amends for Addison suffering for Lloyd’s actions. Marian is uninterested at first but tells Matilda she can repay the debt she owes by funding Marian’s pole-to-pole flight. Marian enlists Eddie Bloom to be her navigator. When the two meet in Hawaii in 1950 ahead of the flight, they reminisce about what Ruth meant to each of them, prior to her death in the war. The proceeding chapters depict brief scenes of their flight, but the focus is on their journey in the arctic. They get caught in a blizzard that deals heavy damage to the plane, Peregrine.
