Summary
This section begins with a cursory summary of Marian’s life between 1929 and 1931. During this time, she receives regular flight lessons from Marx, Wallace’s alcoholism worsens, and the relationship between Marian and Barclay becomes sexual. Marx eventually dies in a plane crash. Barclay refuses Marian’s request to assume Marx’s bootleg routes; in anger, she flies solo over the Pacific Ocean for consolation. This infuriates Barclay but ultimately, he and Marian have sex, after which Barclay tells Marian expressly that he plans to marry her. He tells her that she will have children and stop flying. Marian is not keen on this vision of life.
