Summary
Chapter 11 - Mattie takes Sam up to the mountains. Sam sees the beauty of the mountains, and then Mattie shows her the areas that have been demolished by the coal companies. Mattie reiterates how corrupt the coal companies can be, saying many of the same things that Donovan explained the other day. They go to court twice, once for Lady and once for Phoebe. Mattie threatens the lawyer trying to keep Lady’s husband in prison, threatening to sue him for using an illegal debtor’s prison. He agrees to let Lady’s husband go with a greatly reduced fee. Phoebe’s case goes well again, and the judge agrees to the restraining order, and warns her husband to make sure his brother doesn’t do anything that could cause him to get thrown into prison.
