Chapters Forty-nine — Fifty-two Summary
In Chapter Forty-nine, the group reaches the village of Paquelaie after riding two days. Ismae gets the duchess settled in, then goes to Dunois to tell him of her suspicions about Crunard. Dunois is shocked when he learns that Duval is being poisoned. Dunois tells Ismae that they cannot return to Guerande if the purpose of their trip were to fail. Ismae promises Dunois that if makes their trip successful, she will find some way to get Isabeau away from Crunard.
In Chapter Fifty, the following day is Sunday. As Ismae thinks of all the things that have passed, she escapes outside with her thoughts. The duchess follows her.
