Summary
Married to a man named Paul, with two children, Geordie and Eliza, Seraphina is miserable. Generally, she hates children. She does not care that she is supposed to like them. They cannot even hold a conversation with her. She blames her husband's boring personality for her children's dull demeanors. Though he is handsome, he has "absolutely no personality" (7). Paul inspires irritation, and the children make her angry. She fears there is "something wrong with her" (7). Before she received her licensure, she asked her father if she had to have a family. He slapped her for even making the suggestion.
