Summary
Grace and Bart wander westwards, stealing food wherever they can find it. They see areas of prosperity, where people have large farming estates and plentiful food, but they also pass through towns filled with children dying slowly from hunger. As winter approaches, times are getting harder. Grace worries at Bart's growing attachment to her; he has taken to brushing his hand against her's as they walk, and sometimes putting his arm around her while they sleep. While they shelter under a bridge one night, Grace takes Bart's newspaper from him, and he storms off to bathe in the river. Grace catches herself looking at him as he undresses, and Mary Bresher appears again, and also looks at Bart. They get a ride in a cart into Limerick, and on the way Grace has a nightmare where Bart takes hold of the horses' reins...
