Irene Woodward
Irene Woodward is one of the protagonists in Good Night, Irene. At the outset of the narrative, she boards a train from New York City to Washington DC after volunteering with the Red Cross. She is running away from her family’s rigid expectations and her abusive fiancé. During training, Irene struggles to make the donuts but feels more capable when she successfully goes through Hell Day. She is excited when she and Dorothy are assigned to the same club car, the Rapid City, before boarding the ship to Liverpool. On the journey to Europe, Irene is disturbed by the sight of dying men screaming for help after the other ship is torpedoed. When they are reassigned to London, Irene is flustered when she sees Handyman saunter into the mess hall. She pretends not to recognize him despite the fact that she has been thinking about him...
