Summary
In Chapter 9, Ellie left a note for Dorothy and Irene explaining that she was going home. They felt angry and vowed never to speak of Ellie again. Shortly after, they were sent to an army base in Cambridgeshire and moved into a small house with a thatched roof. Dorothy and Irene were both enamored by the fighter planes. In Chapter 10, they received letters from GIs thanking them for their support and encouragement. They knew that “the real service [they provided] was that their faces, their voices, their send-off might be the final blessing from home for some of these young pilots” (92). In late spring, there were rumors around the camp that the Allies were planning something big. Irene decided to hold a talent show “to help break the tension they all were feeling” (96).
