Summary
“Lucky Toss” takes place in Ukraine after the fall of the Soviet Union. Mikhail (who previously appeared in “Letter of Apology”) now works for Illych. Illych has opened a business in which he displays the mummified saint that Zaya had left behind. The business is fairly successful, and tourists come almost every day to see the saint. Mikhail works as the security guard. The business is located 1933 Ivansk Street, the building where Daniil (“Novostroïka”) used to live. Recently, Mikhail saw that a former KGB colleague killed himself out of shame for the horrors he had helped commit. Mikhail struggles to adjust to life in rudimentary capitalist markets, as even small choices like what food to buy feel full of burdensome uncertainty.
