Section 3, Pages 81 - 121 Summary
Isabella resumes her duties as embassy hostess with all her former enthusiasm and mentions to her father that she would like to stay in London to complete her thesis instead of returning to Weltevreden with him when his term is done. He is unable to find an argument she hasn't thought through, but despite her desire to stay with Ramon, it is hard for Bella to say goodbye to the family when the ship sails. She and Ramon fall into a routine, living in his flat. As her belly grows, they go out less. Ramon goes on regular "business trips" and Bella sees his passport's most recent stamp is from Moscow not Rome. His anger is frightening when he tells her not to pry into his affairs again.
