Part 3, Chapter 20 Summary

The combat grounds are prepared for the battle between Iorek and Iofur. Lyra, who is wary of the battle because Iorek has been traveling without food or rest, consults the alethiometer. It tells her that Iorek is an hour away, and that she should trust him. Because of its pristine condition, additional chest protection, Lyra is terrified when she sees Iofur's armor, which looks superior to Iorek's.

The bears at the watchtower signal that Iorek is coming, and Lyra goes to meet him outside the gates. She apologizes for getting him into this situation, but he is happy because all he wanted to do was fight Iofur. The bears each go through a ritual of explaining the terms of their victory, and then prepare to battle.

The bears clash, and Iorek is soon injured in his left paw, which can now...
