Summary
The latter half of Book 3 begins with a scene in which Luz has a root-induced trip, with psychedelic visions of diamond-shaped flames, people’s faces going cubist, and a teepee sprouting skyward to heaven. Meanwhile, Ig is bitten by some sort of creature and is severely hurt; one whole side of her is swollen and black. Jimmer lectures Luz on her selfishness and encourages her to save everyone further trouble by killing herself. She starts to go through withdrawal syndrome as she sobers up, throwing up everything in her body and experiencing severe tremors. Luz sobs to Ray that she turned out to be no better a caretaker for Ig than the Nut and his crew, and he patiently waits at her side as she sobers, encouraging her not to listen to Levi’s suggestion that she take more root to ease her...
