Summary
The second half of Book 2 opens with a scene in which Luz spots an outlet mall in the desert with a Santa Market and a whimsical carousel. The people of the colony flock to enjoy the discovered structures, praise Luz for her good eye in discovering them, and declare that Luz has a gift. They call this Luz’s offering, and for the first time she feels like she is a good omen. When the colony reconvenes that night over a bonfire, they go around in a circle opening up about their past and how they found themselves there, how they were summoned by the dune, how if they are open and honest, they feel they can be vessels for truth and wonder. Luz agrees; the colony has given her a chance to believe, a sense of spirituality, and purpose.
