Summary
Ray and Luz arrive at the complex where an old comrade named Lonnie and his partner Rita live, fortified by security and walls. It was once an open space where people were free to come and go, and where Ray and Luz took refuge among the lawless community led by Lonnie. Luz recalls how one night she “was fucked up and flattered” and let Lonnie sleep with her, and Ray had remarked on her return that she “came to bed smelling like him” (65). Ronnie determines that Seattle will not work, and that it is impossible to forge papers for them at this point—it is too late for that, and besides, evacuees are now segregated by gender and adult versus children, so they would be separated immediately into labor camps.
They use some sort of ritual using coins and a catalog of hexagrams...
