Hammond Creek
Hammond Creek is the town in Georgia where Neil and Anita grow up. Their community primarily consists of desi families, whose lives are deeply entangled. Neil and Anita live in the same Hammond Creek cul-de-sac, and when they are not getting along, Neil stares at Anita's house through his bedroom window. The chapters in Part One all take place in Hammond Creek, and depict Neil and Anita's childhood there.
When Anita is at the tail end of her high school career, she and her mother move to California to be with her father. Not long later, Neil moves away for college, and pursues his graduate degree in California as well. No matter how much time has passed since his departure from Georgia, Neil remains haunted by the ghosts of Hammond Creek.
