The Sun
The sun symbolizes beauty and radiance. Lacey thinks “my mother was the sun in a dark room” (6). However, her mother’s radiance caused her to be abused and Lacey to be neglected. As well, the sun that beats down on Peaches, while giving beauty to the land, also causes extreme drought which afflicts the town.
Red
Red symbolizes womanhood. Menstruation is red, and Lacey begins the novel thinking she will be a woman once she gets her period. The Diviners is also red, a place of discovery for Lacey where she learns about her sexuality and bodily intuition, which truly allows for Lacey’s growth.
Green Bible
The green GOTS bibles represents the indoctrination of Vern’s teachings. The entire congregation only reads this Bible. Lacey does not initially realize it is an altered, edited version to include Vern and create false importance surrounding him...
