Rory Dochetry
Rory Docherty is an ex-Marine who served in the Korean War. Rory is haunted by the traumatic memories of combat; his experiences taught him to abhor violence. Rory was discharged from the military after losing a foot and part of his leg in combat; he wears a wooden prosthesis. Due in part to the traumas of war, Rory abhors violence and values peace and compassion. After returning to his home in North Carolina, he began to work for Eustace Uptree, brewer of bootleg whiskey. Eustace employs Rory to drive the whiskey to its various delivery locations. Rory lives with his grandmother. Rory experiences friction with the malicious Cooley Muldoon, of a rival bootlegging family. Rory must also evade Harmon Kingman, the new federal agent sent to crack down on bootleg whiskey operations.
Rory eventually falls in love with Christine Adderholt, the daughter of local preacher Asa Adderholt...
