Part Two, Chapters 20-22 Summary
In Chapter 20, we are given a brief summary of the battles that occurred after Lee took over. Lee divided the army into two corps, one under Jackson and the other under General James Longstreet. Seven days of fighting and Lee had defeated the army that threatened Richmond from the east. Even though the Confederates were out numbered Lee had attacked over and over again until General McClellan, leading the Union troops withdraws them back to Washington by sea. McClellan is relieved of command and replaced by General John Pope.
In Chapter 21, the war has been going for over a year and Chamberlain is still a professor at Bowdoin College in Maine. Many of his students are volunteering to fight and he makes a speech to his class telling them that he approves. The leaders of the college...
