Summary
In Chapter V, Anaxandra arrives in Sparta with Menelaus. She marvels at its noisiness and relaxed atmosphere before setting eyes on the slave market. She worries about “all that could go wrong,” chiefly Menelaus finding out that she is not actually Callisto (56). She takes solace in the fact that she felt her goddess agree that this was the best course of action. Menelaus buys her a glass jar; she is entranced by it because she has never seen glass before. Later, they go to the home of a nobleman named Axon, who knew Nicander. Anaxandra lies and says that the gods healed her handicap, since he knows Callisto was sick. He also wonders about her hair color, since he thought Callisto had black hair but Anaxandra has red hair. The next morning, Menelaus tells her that Axon wishes to marry her; Anaxandra tries...
