Summary

Chapter 24: "Alarms by Night" begins as Claire comforts Fanny through her first period. However, Fanny's time in a brothel makes her think she is now old enough to make money. Claire reassures Fanny that they want to protect her, but Fanny recalls her sister, Jane, being forced into prostitution. Jamie arrives to comfort Fanny as she says Jane killed Captain Harkness to protect Fanny and died for it. Jamie promises it was not Fanny's fault. As Claire finds Lem she takes him away to tell him about Fanny. He is saddened that Fanny suffered and asks if Jane went to Hell after committing suicide. Claire reassures him and promises his sister will be safe. They return and Fanny shows them a picture of Jane and their mother. Jamie swears to protect Fanny.
