Zoel is a 17-year-old girl who prefers to be called Zoe. She lives in the Community, an underground city in which everyone is controlled by a computer chip embedded in the back of the neck, keeping them calm and peaceful but also preventing them from experiencing emotions or beauty.

Zoe's secret is that he has begun glitching, or spontaneously disconnecting from the computer system, and she likes it.
