Katherine “Kit” Ann Owens
Katherine “Kit” Ann Owens is the main character and narrator of the novel. Kit has to come to the realization through the course of her life that even though she did not commit the heinous acts that Diane did, she still has a certain responsibility for the way Diane has reacted to circumstances and the way Diane’s life has turned out.
Even though Diane tells Kit that they are alike, Kit argues that she is nothing like Diane, especially after she learns that Diane murdered her father. Kit, however, uses Diane’s secret not only to keep Diane from getting the Severin scholarship but later uses it in an attempt to turn her co-workers against Diane. Although Kit has not killed anyone outright, she has attempted to kill Diane’s dreams by using her secrets against her.
