Summary
In Now, Diane continues to confuse Alex’s death with her father’s. Kit slaps Diane to bring her to the present. They both suffer injuries when the ceiling collapses and Alex’s body falls.
In Now, Serge tells Kit he found Alex’s body but could not complete the job Severin had given him and dispose of it. When Diane returns from the bathroom, Serge makes them tea. Serge suggests to Kit that she needs to become more like Diane who has a what he calls a “deeper” (297) view of life. He describes how Diane killed a mother mouse and her babies with gusto, as if she enjoyed the job. Serge said he wanted people like Diane, with ice in their hearts, banished from the world.
