Summary
In The Prologue, Kit, the narrator, tells the reader that she was not surprised when Diane came back into her life. She indicates that they both know an important thing about the other that no one else knows.
In Then, Kit says that Diane was at her house, studying Hamlet when Diane told her secret. She asked Kit if she really thought it was possible for a person to have no conscious, like Claudius. Kit assumed that Diane was talking about something that someone had done to her but Diane said it was something she had done.
Kit had been attracted to Diane because she was so serious and so private. Diane’s ambition had inspired Kit.
