England is a setting that unites all of the book's characters. They have all lived in England at one time or another, and many of them have lived in London specifically at some point. England is the physical setting for the majority of the book, but it also provides the cultural background and context for the book. As this is a book about black women, the cultural history and current context of England and the United Kingdom has a significant impact on how these characters experience the world. They are minorities in a traditionally white supremacist and patriarchal country. Though the book is set in the late 2010s and major strides have been made toward equality in England, these historical factors still influence the contemporary culture and social justice context in the country.
