Ginny's Brain
Due to the novel's first person point-of-view, the reader has the luxury of joining Ginny where the majority of her story takes place- inside her brain- where, to Ginny, the landscape is literal and her thoughts are concrete. Ginny's brain "is a dark, dark place where no one can see a thing except [her]" (10). She believes leaving her mouth open allows others access to her thoughts. She protects her "secret plan" to leave with Gloria by keeping her mouth shut "so no one will see" what is inside of her brain (36).
Whilst "deep" inside of this setting, it can be difficult, or even impossible, for Ginny to see or hear what is occurring outside (19). Her memory is so vivid, it often blocks out her vision and clogs her ears with the sights and sounds of her past. For example, Ginny wakes up from a nightmare still stuck...
