Summary

At the Special Olympics basketball tournament, Ginny is playing on a team with Brenda, Kayla, and Larry, as well as two other “partners,” or kids who “can keep their mouths closed when they’re thinking” (296). Ginny gets distracted by Gloria’s presence in the bleachers. She is with a little girl whose appearance confuses Ginny because it looks like her. Ginny gets angry and begins to “hyperventilate” because she thinks she has “been replaced” (298). Gloria motions for Ginny to be quiet, and Ginny reminisces about a traumatic incident from her past. Someone on the court calls Ginny’s name, and then she gets knocked to floor. The coach asks Ginny to take a water break and go to the bathroom.
