Summary
In Chapter 9, Harriet asks Clio if the girls can go to school. When Clio says school will corrupt them, Harriet says she wants to go home. To get her to stay, Clio gives her textbooks. While studying, Harriet finds there are no history books on Druhástrana. Through other texts, she learns how neighboring powers took advantage of Druhástrana. Druhástrana then withdrew from the "brotherhood of nations" in a referendum (102). The Druhástranian flag is printed with the backs of three griffins. The more Harriet reads, the more frustrated she becomes. Instead she studies English.
Later, Clio has a crowd of malnourished farmstead girls visit the Gingerbread House so they can see how much better off they would be working for her. The farmstead girls attack the Gingerbread Girls with pinches. After they leave, Clio begins filming a documentary on the...
