Summary
In Chapter 5, Harriet begins telling the story of her childhood in Druhástrana. The place is small, though many believe it is large because of its separation from everything else. Amidst its vast farmland there were several landmarks of Druhástrana: a large wooden clog, a jack-in-the-box, a broken loom, and a dry well known as Gretel's Well.
As a girl, Harriet ran a wheat farm with her parents. Like the other surrounding farms, the Lee family was never paid enough money to survive, and were constantly malnourished. Margot always made them gingerbread to eat, however. Having been born into a wealthy family, Margot is aware of the corrupt political systems of Druhástrana. Her family, however, disowned her after she married Simple Simon Lee. Their marriage and lives become, however, complicated when Harriet is born. In retrospect, Harriet realizes the farm families'...
