Point of View

The short story is written from Brian's first person point of view. By writing the narrative from Brian's lens, the author is able to thoroughly inhabit the consciousness of an average citizen in the Region. Brian's character is neither impressive nor demonstrative. He is cautious, careful never "to violate politeness" (2). Indeed, his character is a symbolic representation of the average American individual. Brian tries to be "all about Team," putting the supposed good of the collective above his own needs (4). In short, Brian is not courageous, nor is he heroic. He is reluctant to question, preferring comfort over upheaval. However, by crafting the "Ghoul" narrative through Brian's lens, the author is able to explore even the smallest, seemingly least significant individual's ability to create change.
