Brother Zachariah/Jem Carstairs

James Carstairs, known to family and friends as Jem, is a member of the Silent Brothers by this time in his life, which is why he is also known as Brother Zachariah. He has two identities because being a member of the Silent Brothers is a full commitment but many people still refer to him as Jem. Because there is another character in this novel named James, he is always referred to as either Brother Zachariah or Jem. It is important that the reader keep in mind that Brother Zachariah and Jem are the same character. As a Silent Brother, he is dedicated to his work, especially in providing guidance and healing to those in need, but is never willing to make the transition from Shadowhunter to Silent Brother complete.
