Summary
The next story, “Every Exquisite Thing,” picks up in London shortly after the end of the first story. Anna Lightwood is looking through her brother Christopher's closet and notes that all his clothes are damaged in some way, the result of all his experiments. Anna knows Christopher will not notice that he is missing clothes. Anna chooses several items and changes out of her tea gown. She has to make a few adjustments but feels more confident just by wearing men's clothing. She imagines how she would look if she had better clothes. She pretends she is dancing with a beautiful girl. Her mother, Cecily, interrupts the scene. Anna rushes to change back, throwing Christopher's clothes in her closet.
