Summary
In Chapter 19, Marie McKenna’s daughter invited Gerry Fegan to look at her light-up tennis shoes. She challenged Fegan to a jumping contest, and, to please the child, he jumped on the sidewalk in front of Marie’s home. Ellen declared that she had won, and set out ahead of the two adults for a walk around Marie’s neighborhood. Marie commented that Ellen had “taken a shine” to Gerry (135). Gerry asked where Ellen’s father was, and Marie replied that she didn’t know. She said that her husband had known what she had “sacrificed” to be with him, and he still betrayed her (136). She didn’t want a man like that in her daughter’s life.
