Summary
At the outset of Chapter 14, Katherine had her baby boy. Unlike when she gave birth to Olive, Nina had no premonition or inkling that her best friend was in labor. A week after Katherine returned from the hospital, Nina visited her at their new house in Surrey. At the house, she observed Katherine’s desire to hide her fatigue and the messiness of a life with children. While her friend masqueraded behind a façade of family joy and pastel domesticity, it was “the shambles of raising children [that Nina] craved” (230). Nina attempted to contact Lola, to assuage her loneliness, but her friend continued to be inexplicably out of communication.
