Summary
In Section 2, Maya begins her “nightly ritual” (50), which consists of getting supplemental nutrients through a port in her stomach. After helping Maya, her dad goes to check on Cat. Cat explains that while she is happy that the move will help Maya, she does not like the new place. He explains that she is just homesick and missing her friends. When Cat complains about everyone talking about ghosts in the town, he suggests that there may have been just as many ghosts back home, but she just did not see them. He tells her goodnight, and she gets frightened. The wind rattles the window, and Maya gets up and looks outside. She spots the black cat in the tree.
