Summary
In “The Dusk Market,” many people visit the dusk market on their “way home from work” (175). The women who work there remind the visitors of the women they know. People can only see the market if they are invited. Salewa is one of the women who sells at the dusk market. Her stand includes tinctures and spirits. Salewa has been in Lagos since she was 21 but has felt lonely ever since.
One day, Salewa feels distracted at her booth. She cannot focus on her sales and worries that the dusk market is fading for her. She tries to ignore the offensive jeers from passing men. The market asks for “the pleasant hum of commerce” and the “warmth of camaraderie” but Salewa struggles to maintain a happy demeanor (179). Still feeling distracted, she leaves her booth and heads to another nearby...
