Sarah (Harrington) Mackey

Sarah is one of the two main characters in the book. The majority of the story is told from her perspective. Sarah is the co-founder of a charity called Clowndoctors, which she created with her husband Reuben. Sarah and Reuben are now separated, but on friendly terms. They continue to run the charity together.

As a teenager, Sarah was involved in an accident that cost her her younger sister Hannah. In the beginning of the novel, the reader is led to believe that Hannah is dead. However, the reader learns in the novel’s big twist that Hannah is not dead. Instead, her best friend Alex died in the accident and Hannah blames Sarah.

Each year, Sarah returns to England from her home in Los Angeles on the anniversary of the accident. She meets a man named Eddie on one of her visits and falls madly...
