Ghost purchases the seeds not only because they are his favorite snack food, but because he enjoys visiting Mr. Charles, who sheltered him and his mother from his father many years before. Mr. Charles has become something of a grandfatherly figure to Ghost, and the buying of sunflower seeds is a demonstration of loyalty – of visiting, of talking, of listening, of encouragement, and of support.
