Summary
In pages 109 - 130, Bill and the Professor spend increasing amounts of time on the hill, working on their secret project. They tell the group they are making special plans. Bill mentions foraging for hazelnuts, which Silvie takes as an order. While foraging, she notes how distracted her father seems from her and Alison. The sound of the drums from the ceremony echoes in her head. She gets lost and wanders for hours without food or water.
Back at the camp, Silvie finds her mother crouching before the burnt-out fire. Silvie grows frantic, anxious her dad will find the fire out, though it is unbearably hot.
