Summary
In pages 39 - 61, in the morning Silvie finds her mother standing on round slate stones near the fire. She tells her mother they will explode from the water expansion, unsure why her dad did not warn her. Her mother acts unconcerned. Silvie tries to help with the cooking. Her mother does not give in. Everyone shows up at the fire. Bill and the Professor say they set traps for rabbits. Molly does not want to kill any animals. Silvie thinks about all the animals they are disturbing.
Later, Silvie and the students walk to the beach for mussels. They ask her about the hut. When they reach a field of cows, Molly refuses to pass through it.
