The second scene of the novel is set in Surrey, Massachusetts. Aubrey was a teenager still trying to cope with her psychic abilities. This is where Missy, who had been dead only a short time, gave Aubrey the violets that eventually led to Aubrey's realization that Missy had used the flowers to name her killer. This is also where Missy died and where Aubrey settled down as an adult, trying to establish a stable, normal life for herself. The majority of the action of the novel takes place here, from the location of the carnival about 20 years ago to the newspaper where Aubrey works as a reporter in present day.
