Summary
In Chapter 12, Aubrey pulls out the dead flowers from the bouquet Kitty sent. The purple flowers spark a memory of other purple flowers, carnival music, a man with a nice smile, and “a girl who didn't speak” (109). Aubrey pushes the memory away. She has a voice message from realtor Marian Sloane about the Serino home. Aubrey senses an urgency in the message that has nothing to do with Marian. Aubrey is distracted by the same spirit that has been near Levi for days. She is angry because she has worked hard to keep spirits away from the office. She tells the spirit that it should know Levi would “never be open to hearing you” (111). Aubrey realizes Levi's “brooding mood” has “delivered a specter” (111).
