Chicago

Chicago is the overarching setting of the novel. This is the setting where Jerome grew up and died and wanders around as a ghost. The city also functions as a character in the novel because Jerome is introduced to racism and structural inequality through his own experience in Chicago which is built upon when he learns more about Mississippi from Emmett's perspective.

School

School is the setting where Jerome meets Carlos and confronts his bullies. Jerome did not enjoy going to school when he was alive because he was unmotivated by his lessons and he struggled to make friends. He did enjoy walking to school with Kim, however, and he was saddened to see her walking with Carlos.

Courthouse
