Summary
Jerome and Emmett sit on together on the church steps. Jerome thinks about what parts of his life had been real and what he had looked forward to in his life. Emmett does the same, and they commiserate together about all of the opportunities they missed by dying so young. Jerome asks Emmett how he died, but he is not willing to say yet. All he says is that his mother wanted him to go to Nebraska with her in the summer and he regrets going to visit his cousins in Mississippi.
In Chapter 13, the Jerome and his family are back at the courthouse. Outside, thousands of protestors march and the police wear riot gear. Jerome chooses to visit Sarah. He asks her why her dad does not see him. Sarah also tells him that her parents have not allowed her to watch...
