Summary
In Part IV, “La Chilla,” Chapter 1, although “no one talked about at La Casa Mexicana,” a division formed between “the Anglo majority and the four Mexican members of the senior class” (177). They now excluded María Elena from their group. She and Guálinto stopped talking, too. Guálinto’s friends thought it was better, as they had never liked her.
One day, Guálinto met up with Francisco and El Colorado at the social club. Observing the scene, he felt annoyed by the Gringos. When Guálinto heard Feliciano wanted to see him, he and El Colorado left. While walking, they discussed their plans for the future. Guálinto wanted to go to college. El Colorado planned to work.
