Summary
In Part III, “Dear Old Gringo School Days,” Chapter 1, Feliciano registered Guálinto for school. The principal enrolled him in Miss Cornelia’s low first grade class. Guálinto was curious when Feliciano told Miss Cornelia Guálinto “was an Indian name” (111).
In Chapter 2, Guálinto started school. He met his classmates El Colorado and Orestes Sierra.
In Chapter 3, Guálinto entered Miss Cornelia’s class. Unlike many schools in the States, Jonesville schools were integrated. However, Miss Cornelia was “a stern disciplinarian,” and particularly harsh to Latin American students (117).
In Chapter 4, Guálinto ran into La Nena Osuna, the girl he had started seeing “almost every Sunday in church” (118). He was enamored by her.
