Summary

In Part II, “Jonesville-on-the-Grande,” Chapter 1, although “officially part of the United States,” Jonesville remained “a Mexican town” for over 50 years (36). As more “English-speaking adventurers moved in,” Mexicans were forced “to clear away” their ancestors’ land for roads, farming, and groves (36).

At El Danubio Azul, Feliciano met Faustino Bello and Juan Rubio. Faustino set Feliciano up with the job and offered him a house nearby. Feliciano doubted he would be able to afford it.

In Chapter 2, Feliciano reported to the cantina. Faustino said he could either rent or buy the house. Because he had inherited money from his mother and would be making a decent wage, Feliciano decided to buy it. Shocked by his good luck, he felt he could fulfill his promise to Gumersindo after all (40).
