Summary

The book is organized in short titled sections, or scenes, rather than numbered chapters. In the first section, titled “How They Met,” the author introduces her two protagonists: Lizzie Bultmann, a college student who is heartbroken and high on weed, out bowling with her friend Marla, and George Goldrosen, a dental student who is on a date at the same bowling alley with his dream girl, Julia. When Lizzie hurls her bowling ball down the alley, it collides with George’s ball in the neighboring alley, and he angrily accuses her of ruining his imminent strike. Marla asks George for his number so that she and Lizzie can make amends over a drink.
